Smuckers Kidvitations and a SWEEPSTAKES!!

This is a sponsored post from BlogHer and Smuckers.

When Ozzie started Kindergarten, he could read.

"Of course he can", his teacher said. I assume **ALL** first-time Kindergarten parents say that because she kind of rolled her eyes at me. But here's the thing... he really could read. We didn't teach him, he taught himself. Seriously... One day, he grabbed the Bible out of my hand and started to read aloud to me when he was about 4 and a half. It wasn't long, however, before his teacher found she had her hands full with a goofy kiddo, the youngest in the class (and with the total immaturity to go with it), who could fluently and comprehensively ... read... and I truly think he was one of her "favorites" because he could understand her jokes and she didn't have to labor over things with him.

One of the ways we, as a family, celebrated Ozzie's reading in Kindergarten was by sending a note in his lunch each day. Sometimes, I encouraged him "You are going to have an awesome time in art today because it's YELLOW day". Other times I just loved on him "Son, you are the greatest 5 year old I've ever known and I'm happy to be your Mom". But what Ozzie really liked was when I included jokes in his lunch (typical boy, didn't appreciate Momma's touchy-feely side).

At first, I wrote out jokes that I knew or could make up. Unfortunately, it wasn't long before I was out of ideas so I did what all good techno moms do... I googled. Do you know how many pages of Thanksgiving jokes are online?? MILLIONS! I found jokes for every holiday known to man (and some I'm pretty sure were just made up). I found jokes about whatever hobby or idea Ozzie was into at the time (basketball, trains, animals, beaches). I even found school lunch jokes.

Ozzie's class had 2 aides that were in the classroom all day. One sat at Ozzie's table to help a special needs student. She emailed me and said she loved Ozzie's lunch time because hearing the jokes (when he read them out loud), reminded her to put notes in her own childrens' lunches. She said Ozzie's lunch table really enjoyed them too. I told her I looked them up Sunday night, printed out a page and then wrote them on scrap paper before I stuck them in the lunchbox, simple as that.

Touching base with a child during the school day is so easy, so fun and so important. My boys love to know that I'm thinking of them. Nolan's heading off to Kindergarten

in less than a month and I will be sure to put jokes in HIS lunch too. Being gone 8 hours from Mom is tough on little guys; having a note makes them feel closer to me.

Smuckers has a very neat website up... lots of ways to connect with kiddos. I especially like the Kidvitations. On it, you will find places to personalize a note for your child (complete with fonts and graphics) with a special activity together and some loving. How fun to open your lunch after a hard math test to find: "Dear Son, Let's go swimming when you get home. Love Mom" or "Dear daughter, Let's skip chores tonight and go feed the ducks down at the pond. Love Dad". I'm sure ours will say something like: "Hey Boys, Let's go to the home improvement store and BUILD something!"

Life's too short to miss out connecting with our children. It's the perfect time to start! Smuckers gives us ideas, recipes, and a free site to use. I'll be printing these goodies for school lunch, that's for sure!

They are all cool ideas. I don't have any kids myself but I do help colead a youth group and I have two adorable nieces (my best friend's little girls) and I am in love with the story book idea. I'm thinking about making that a part of the youth group and every month have the kids add another page to the book and then coping it and giving it to them at the end of the year as a way for them to see the progress we made through the year.

I am now a grandma and the same activities I enjoyed with my kids are still great fun with my 4yr old grandson. Pack a PB&J and head to the park for lunch.Recently when it was raining I placed a blanket on the floor in the living room, added a few house plants for outside flair. He helped make the sandwiches and we had a great picnic and afterwards went on a scavenger hunt for his little plastic bugs I had hidden all over the house. I am not sure which one of us enjoyed it more.

I am a grandma. The first "toy" my grandson asks for when he comes to visit is his special box. His box has a key and a lock. He loves to open it with the key. Inside are his art supplies. He takes out his stapler, scissor, glue and markers. I provide the paper and together we have our "art" time. The best part, he puts everything in the box so he can lock it up again.

My nephew and I do many creative activities together. We paint, we make up stories and I type them out, and we are working on making a fun short movie featuring his pet turtle.

When Rhiannon gets a little older we will be doing "Top Chef" contests pretty often - after all, her mommy is quite the foodie.

First up - Top Chef PB&J - what else could go with Jiff and Smuckers? Let's take a look through the pantry: Doritoes? Funions? Crispy fried onions (they have to be good for something other than green bean casserole)? Banana slices? Dill Pickles?

We each get to make our own sandwich, divide it into fourths and judge whose is the best. The winner gets to choose TV for the evening.

We love to take walks together. Since it's in the city, we walk down residential streets to look at things like flowers or down the business streets to see cars and BIG TRUCKS!

I connect through books: reading them to the kids; giving them books; taking them to the library. Thanks for the contest.

We bake! We have our own little baking party, just the three of us and we make a ton of cupcakes and cookies and the girls decorate them and then we hand them out to our neighbors and friends...it's such a fun special way to have quality time with my girls!

I like the "Road Trip" activity idea and could use the paint box background to invite my child on a trip to an art museum.

My daughter loves books and loves to "boogie down" to music. We have the music on almost all day. During reading or stories, she adores to point to the book. Something we believed she picked up from us pointing to different characters and following the words with our fingers. When we are on our road here in the country, we let her drive in the truck to the house. She is her daddy's daughter. Complete gear and speed head.

We take large yogurt containers and pick raspberries and blackberries in the summer along the sides of the road. (We have some secret favorite spots.) Then we use the berries to make ice cream in our ice cream maker. (Did you know it's cheaper to buy table salt than road salt in the suburbs of New York City?) And we buy heavy cream and whip it by hand with an old fashioned hand crank mixer. And eat home made ice cream and whipped cream!

We love taking road trips together and experiencing new and different places.
Usually it is just a state or two over and for just a couple of days or a weekend. But during that time we might explore a new museum, go to the zoo or just stay in a cabin playing games, fishing and making smores.
As long as we are all together that is what matters most.

My son actually made the storybook this summer. It was about 50 pages long and he called it Fortunately, Unfortunately and it was awesome! I actually had it bound for him to keep. He is so proud of this book!

My niece and I make plans to get together for art projects and baking. This gets her away from her parents (giving them a break) for a while and we have lots of fun.

As my girls get older, it gets harder and harder to all get together. We have made a commitment to each other - girls day - once a month we all get together and do something - sometimes a picnic, trip to the dog park (2 girl doggies too) - lol But we love to connect and laugh together. The local paper always lists free things going on in the county so money isn't an option. Would be nice to win so that money could be an option and do something special - perhaps a show in the city - been a long time.

Now that school's starting, I'm reminded of when our kids started kindergarten. We lived in the country and they rode a school bus. After about a month of riding the kindergarten bus home, we drove their bus route, having them tell us the directions from school to our house, turning wherever they told us the bus turned. Sometimes they could even tell us who got off the bus at a certain stop. They directed us where to go. They loved it.
